Bio

Grungy One is the artistic name for Andrew Dong Hee Han, who was born in Seoul, Korea (1989). He immigrated to Los Angeles in 1999, and has been living in the United States since. He was greatly influenced by graffiti during his teenage years and he has been working as an artist since 2008.  During his 20's, he explored the styles of abstraction. From the influences as a street artist, he learned to paint his expressions through shapes and colors, recording his life through canvases and murals. He started showing his work around San Francisco and had his first Solo Exhibition in Seoul, Korea. He has been continuing the subject of anxiety, nightmares and consciousness though his work and focusing on the behaviors of our human experiences.

Artist Statement

I follow the basic instinctive principles of color and shape to express my psyche. My life experiences and environments have inspired me to paint. The subject of anxiety and nightmares has been prominently featured in my paintings as I still struggle with my emotional demons.  Painting is a therapeutic release of my unforgettable memories, both positive and negative. It is my form of meditation and the cultivation of patience. My process is an intuitive freestyle that is best described as improvisation with a premeditated vision.  Most of the time, the canvas dictates the mood and sequence of my brush strokes.  Without understanding the rules of color, shape and their unique qualities, it is almost impossible to develop any type of coherent style or expression. Within this framework, I combine seemingly dissonant colors and shapes into something balanced and harmonious to express my current state of mind.

I have found acrylic and spray paint to be the optimal medium for my craft. The quick drying features of these paints align with my intuitive, expressive freestyle. My intuition guides my abstraction through a premeditated vision without sketching.  I enjoy the mood and atmosphere that colors create and their complexity through the combinations of mundane shapes. My paintings represent my observational study of colors, patterns and balances of shape. My art is the latest replica and reflections of my psyche.
